Opera is to singing as ballet is to dance: a foundation for technique.
Understanding how to sing freely is the "secret" to unlock your voice and potential. With good technique, you open up all possibilities for how to style it, and discover your own unique and authentic sound.
In the videos below, you'll see (and hear) the difference of vocal styling from two performances I sang in. The one on the left is from the opera The Marriage of Figaro and the voice has a full, warm sound. On the right is a piece from the operetta Die Fledermaus (a style similar to musical theatre) and the voice sounds more bright and clear. Both are sung freely and with the same foundation of vocal technique.
